I’ve been in the Carpenters Union for 23 years.my son also is a carpenter.We work in an oil refinery in Indiana(U.S.).Yes,it can be dangerous.The company we work for is a leader in safety in our industry and we do our best to look out for one another.And contrary to what some here might think,we are paid very well.My benefit package is over 15 dollars an hour.There are quite a number of guys just like me that earn over 100,00 dollars a year.And if you think we don’t need education – guess again.The work we do demands a knowledge of both algebra and geometry to make things work.
But,it isn’t for everyone.It can be hard work and you have to enjoy being outside most of the time.There is absolutely nothing wrong with earning an honest living to support yourself and family.

those jobs pay very well here but many people think you are stupid if you work with your hands so everybody wants an office job that pays nothing plus most ppl are lazy.
i do some construction in the summer and i am a welder so i go to construction sites sometimes and fix machines.

i live in new york state and most of the ppl working are white men unless the state says you must hire other color ppl

Well it’s hard work.
You got jackoff contractors who sometimes don’t pay out.
Long days doing hard labor.
It can be dangerous work.
You know things like this.

Honestly, I think manual labor isn’t respected enough. At walmart, you can get a job as a cart pusher and get 40 hours a week. The problem is that it’s the lowest paying job there. You don’t get full time benefits, or anything. They do provide Gatorade for the really hot days, but that’s about it.

With the influx of illegal aliens entering the job market, they have cut the wages to a ridiculous low level.

Ever been on a hot tar roof in the 100 degree summer sun…. I didn’t think so.

I loved working construction when I was younger. I was a laborer for a masonry crew. I made the mortar and wheeled to the masons and I stocked the concrete blocks and bricks.

Lots of time spent outside and I was in fantastic shape.

There’s better paying jobs available once you have an education, though.

I love construction work.
Most likely because not as many job’s are present when the weather is bad ” snowing ect”
You can always find patch jobs when its raining season.

I live in the southwest desert and working in the middle of summer outside is brutal. Last summer it went weeks on end with the temp not going below 110.

Actually I live in Houston. This is a very industrial city. We have refineries, scrap metal, demolishing, building, and etc. Most of the workers in construction are Hispanics. I think nobody else wants to do the dirty job. Plus there’s dangers of getting killed out there. Especially when making a building.

Too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer
Dangerous occupation, especially if you are working on a 30 story building
What people work these jobs…? Guys that are tough as nails.
