My business is maintaining aquariums, installing aquariums and treating sick fish. Some clients are very upscale. Last week I installed a 130 gallon half cylinder into a wall, new construction. This was a $5,000 job. I made about $750 on about 10 hour’s work. One of my best jobs ever.
I also maintained half a dozen tanks for various offices and homes last week. Typical set up is $1,000-$1,500 and I earn about $50 per hour doing this. These are my top clients. Some weeks are worth about $300 from them, some more like $450.
Great hourly rate. Not many hours. Only so much work I can find.
I’ve thought about working in more downscale markets. I did a job that only made about $25 per hour for 2 hours on a fairly inexpensive tank a few weeks ago. I only took it because I needed the money, as I didn’t work many hours that week.
Am I wasting my time going after the smaller jobs that mean more work for less pay? I need to make $750 a week. I only hit that about 1 out of 4 weeks. My average is
more like $500 a week.

I’ll make this as short as possible.
My boyfriends father works for a company that does patio covers and other construction on houses. He goes out and does the estimates, and I think he makes sure the job is done, not sure what else he really does. Anyway, he needs a full time assistant. I’ve helped him out a little, organizing paperwork and calling customers to follow up (see if they had any questions, if they might be interested in doing the job).
So my boyfriends dad calls me today and offered me a job. He said I will be guaranteed a certain amount of money each week. Then with every job I get customers to do I get a $100 bonus. I’d mostly be calling customers and following up with them, some paperwork, and going downtown to get permits.
He does not have benefits to offer me. I would be working from home, or from his house. Pretty much set my own hours, kinda be my own boss.

My current job is monday – friday 8:30 to 4:30. Very laid back office, sign company. I’ve been there a little over a year now. I love the owner and his wife, they are great people to work for. The work is pretty easy, can get a little hectic occasionally. But I like what I do. Even the thought of leaving my current job makes me want to cry, just because they are so nice and understanding.

If I go to work for my boyfriends father I will be guaranteed an extra $60 per week, plus whatever extra bonus I get for getting the new customers. I wont have to drive much, so I should save on gas money also. And like I said I’d be working from home, or from his house most of the time.

I just don’t know if it is a good idea to leave what I’ve got now when i’m happy here. I would love the extra money though.

Does it seem like a good idea to work for his dad? Or should I stay put?

How to get a construction job in Houston Texas.

Hi my name is Lauren. I am 25 years old. I used to work for a construction company in Katy Texas and I now work for a Civil Engineering Company. I am an Auto-CAD drafter now. I miss doing construction. I love the thrill of watching a job come together. I used to decorate clients houses and I used to do a lot of remodeling.

I am way out of date now. I am not up on all the new stuff out there but I love it and I would love to get back into it. Do any of you all know how I can get back into that field?

I love this field. It is my passion and I miss it.

There is a problem though. I am a little 5’ tall white girl and no one will even consider hiring me. They think I can do the work. I will get up and do all the stuff a guy will.
You all seam to not understand what I am asking. I am not looking to make money on the side or off the net. I want a normal construction job. With a construction company. I want to know how to get the job. How do I get in.

Unemployment is far higher than what is being reported. They are not counting people that are underemployed (you know, college educated adults that are taking teenage jobs and are working 25 hrs a week without health or dental coverage). They are not reporting teenage unemployment. They are not counting some people as being unemployed when they are (like minorities, people that have trades but not a college degree, etc.). They are also not reporting that in the Great Depression, there weren’t food stamps or medicaid to help people get by. Without social programs like those, more people would be totally homeless and hungry, like in the Depression. They also aren’t counting people that have been unemployed for a number of years. And the list goes on. Also when are jobs going to start popping up in America again? The new ‘jobs bill’ that Obama is signing will help construction workers, but how will that help the rest of us to flourish and prosper?

First of all…thanks for any advice given as our new home is really becoming a nightmare. So, here goes in regards to the baseboards:
If you look at most of our baseboards, primarily, the corners, they are sooooo chunky. It appeared to me, before doing some digging, that the “construction crew” litterally painted over all material on the baseboards, i.e. giving the lovely look we have. So, upon contacting the builder, they said that we should expect some damage and that there is nothing they could do without damage to the baseboards (uh..replace them then!). So, today I decided that I would fix one edge to show them what a proper baseboard should look like. Once I peeled of the paint, I discovered, yes they did paint over any material on the baseboards…and, that the horrible caulk job throughout the home is because of the grout next to the baseboards. It appears as though they put the tile up to the side of the baseboard and not under…IS THIS PROPER FLOORING PROCEDURE???
We bought this “inventory” new home and closed about 3 weeks ago. As far as I know, these Lennar homes all have tile as opposed to laminate floor. Due to them abutting the tile to the baseboard, the caulk line where ever there is tile required more caulk therefore looking chunky on the top and bottom of these baseboards…this is just one of the problems with the house. I am beginning to see the whole “sub-contractor sub-contracting issue” people are talking about. I just want to know the proper procedure so when the DM comes through tomorrow, I know what I am talking about since my husband will be at work…they seem to think I have no clue though we have remodeled our prior home before moving. PS>>>all you answers are very helpful.

We moved into our new home Dec 2005 in Jax, FL. A few months later, my husband recd a job offer from Microsoft, so we moved to WA. Due to high home prices in Redmond, WA, we decided to rent a place in WA. So far, since May, we have had to pay a mortgage payment and rent payment each month that total aver $4K. After settling from the move, we looked into selling out home in FL. The home builder has now dropped their prices for new construction in that neighborhood. When we moved, the home that we bought for $240K was selling for $280K. Currently, the new homes are $216K. We have been trying to find a renter knowing that we cannot get the entire mortgage payment ($1965), and have dropped our asking rental price down to $1000. Still nothing. It’s a brand new place, nothing’s wrong with it and is in a fabulous location.

What are my options? We can no longer afford to make this mortgage payment and are in serious financial trouble.

TIA!
A appreciate everyone’s quick responses.

To AEN – in case there was any confusion, there is negative equity. We currently owe $242,000 and the current retail is $216,000.

I don’t want to be foreclosed one and have my credit ruined. That’s why I’m researching other alternatives.

What exactly is a short sale?
If the lender okays it, do I just get a normal signature loan for the difference?
Should I get in contact with a mortgage broker, as well?

I am almost 5 weeks pregnant and have an appt for an abortion tomorrow. My fiance wants me to keep the baby but I am leaning towars a no and think this will be a bad decision if we keep it. Here’s the back story.
We’ve been together for 7 yrs, living together for 2 yrs. We fight ALL THE TIME .. I mean on a daily basis and cannot agree on anything. In fact, the time I found out i was pregnant we did not speak to eachother for 2 weeks an his response was “it’s not my baby” After he talked things over with HIS MOM (instead of me..) he decided that he wants us to have the baby. But even since then, we bhave fought at least 10 times (just like 4 day span). He is very aggressive and tempermental and he cannot have a calm discussion.. automatically screams, yells wont let me get a word in. I usually just ignore it and go to a different room – then he doesnt talk to me for a few days. Right before I found out about the pregnancy, the relationship was pretty much on its way out.

The other issue is that we are both unemployed – I lost my job a year ago an have not been able to find a new one. He lost his a month ago an since he is in banking, chances of finding a new job are slim so he is doing side construction jobs here an there. We barely can afford, mortgage an bills.
