well, considering all the devastation left behind by Katrina and her sister (Rita) last year, there should be lenty of opportunities that can be had just by looking for construction/demolition sites and asking for the foreman or general contractor.
be sure to have the proper boots and hard hat in your truck or car
Many sources of construction jobs in New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The best are the appropriate Craig’sList sites and the Louisinan and Mississippi State Employment Offices – links below.
CRAIG’S LIST:
Craigslist.org is a massive collection of online classified ads, organized into categories by location. These are ads you won’t usually find posted anywhere else.
Check out the jobs and “gigs” – “gigs” are mostly short term jobs – on Craig’s List for New Orleans and Gulfport/Biloxi.
If you’re not familiar with Craig’s List, it’s a site – by city or state – with online classifieds posted by people for free (usually), with the newest postings at the top.
I’d recommend just browsing through the job postings by clicking on the word “jobs” and scrolling down to see what was posted today (so far), yesterday, the day before yesterday, etc. as far back as you want to go. They do have the jobs by category, but I like to browse through everything because something you want may be in a category you don’t expect or wouldn’t have checked.
You can also search through the postings using the usual key words (start with “construction” or “carpentry” whatever you want – without the quotes) when you are on the “jobs” and “gigs” main pages. If you type your query into the search bar on the home page, it will search through everything, not just the jobs, and Craig’s List has personals, apartments for rent, stuff for sale, etc. So, that could get messy…
They also provide an e-mail service when new postings appear. Click on “subscriptions” near the bottom of the left most column of the home page, and sign up.
“Keep your shields up” when you’re looking at the Craig’s List job postings, just like you should for any site. Not every listing is a genuine job – there will be work-at-home-scams and other questionable listings.
Also check the State Employment Offices, they have local offices in many locations, people who’s job it is to help people find jobs, and resources to help people plus job postings:
* Louisiana – http://www.ldol.state.la.us/
* Mississippi – http://www.mdes.ms.gov/wps/portal/
Good luck!
